There are rumors that Guatemala may close because of risks of black market adoptions taking place through private international adoption professionals. I recommend using an established agency in the country from which you seek to adopt. there are too many things that can go wrong and using an established, accredited, licensed agency in the country from which you want to adopt will help you in the end. private international adoption is very challenging and risky. if you decide to venture on this path please make sure you get multiple references from adoption professionals, that the US State Department has this professional listed as someone authorized to perform or assist adoptions, and make sure the attorneys in-country are equally reputable. but please consider using an agency!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30259745.post-1280148360817040472007-02-05T13:16:00.000-05:002007-02-05T13:16:00.000-05:00Serenity,

I can only think of a couple of agencies that charge that much and I don't think you necessarily get better service with them. Some of this comes down to how open and flexible you are to various situations and how willing you are to do a lot of leg work. It sounds like you would be willing to do your own leg work (which you can do in conjunction with your agency's efforts). I can recommend some agencies that might be more affordable for you and are licensed in MA but I need more background about what you're interested in regarding birth situations. Why don't you email me (anyone can) at Liz@StorkLawyer.com and I can answer your questions privately and in greater depth. In the meantime, $31k sounds like an awful lot of money when you're willing to do some work on your own!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30259745.post-21993769527886089572007-02-02T02:20:00.000-05:002007-02-02T02:20:00.000-05:00Elizabeth,

I have a copy of the Infertility Survival Handbook and if this adoption book is anything like that, it will be a great resource as well as a source of encouragement for people.

My questions are about private international adoption. Until recently, I didn't even realize this was an option. How would I start to research or find information on this? What kind of people and institutions (attorneys, etc) would it involve? How is it similar and different from international adoptions through an agency? Really, any information about this type of adoption would be helpful to me at this point since I know nothing about it.Summerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10462071403127406819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30259745.post-81910903914317392742007-02-01T14:21:00.000-05:002007-02-01T14:21:00.000-05:00kThanks for the interview!! I actually ha...Thanks again, Mel - this was great!

I actually have a few additional questions for her. This might get long. :)

In her book, she mentions that using an adoption attorney for a domestic adoption might be a lower cost alternative than going with an agency - of course, the downside is that you have to do a lot of the legwork yourself in terms of finding a birthmother.

She doesn't discuss all that much about the process of finding birthmothers on your own in the book, however (I expect that it would have changed the scope of the book too much).

Given that I just got a quote of $31K from a domestic agency, if we go down the adoption path I am thinking about using an adoption attorney to lower our cost. Since I live in Massachusetts, I believe that I do need some form of agency to finalize the adoption.

Are there resources out there for me to find birthmothers on my own?

Related to that first question... how do agencies treat this sort of situation; where I've got everything on my own, but need their help in making the adoption "official?" It seems that there aren't many agencies out there who would take kindly to just being the paper-pusher, given the fees they're quoting me.Serenityhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17765237663006604157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30259745.post-15220702864460685682007-01-31T15:06:00.000-05:002007-01-31T15:06:00.000-05:00Amazing interview and thank you for sharing your s...Amazing interview and thank you for sharing your story!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
