The 49th Circle Time: The Show and Tell Weekly Thread

Show and Tell is wasted on elementary schoolers. Join several dozen bloggers weekly to show off an item, tell a story, and get the attention of the class. In other words, this is Show and Tell 2.0. Everyone is welcome to join, even if you have never posted before and just found out about Show and Tell for the first time today. So yank out a photo of the worst bridesmaid's dress you ever wore and tell us the story; show off the homemade soup you cooked last night; or tell us all about the scarf you made for your first knitting project. Details on how to participate are located at the bottom of this post.

Let's begin.

During Pesach, before she went home, Josh's grandmother pulled me aside to give me her crystal cake plate. She recently moved from her apartment to a senior community and didn't have space for everything and she told me that she wanted me to have this, the reason being that cake plays a large role in our relationship.

I am not going to be able to adequately put into words how much this meant to me. I am used to being adored by my own grandmother who has known me since birth. It is quite another thing to be loved by Josh's grandmother, who notices the small things about me (my love of baking cakes) and presents a gift that speaks volumes. She knows how much family means to me--I have certainly pestered her enough times to recount stories for me from Josh's family so I can writes them down for the twins--and this cake plate brings with it history. A cake plate is the perfect fit--I am not a jewelry person or a clothing person. I am an old-pictures-or-serving-pieces person.

And beyond that, when she introduces us to strangers, she refers to both of us as her grandchildren. Only if the person questions everyone's relationship does she clarify and state that Josh is her grandson and I am his wife. But until pressed, we are all her grandchildren--those that she has known since childhood and those that have married into the family--and though I started this post by calling her Josh's grandmother, she is simply called Grandma by all of us as well, never differentiating which great-grandmother is from my family and which one comes from Josh's side.

Here is one of those places where words fail--it means more than I can express that she has taken me as a granddaughter rather than a woman who has married her grandson. It is a small distinction, but like the gift, it speaks volumes.

When she gave me the cake plate, she told me that she wanted me to have something to remember her by which made me profoundly sad to consider that future. It is hard to live in the moment with a mind that can comprehend the future--by which we all have this problem. And I am just trying to enjoy today, which includes both the cake I baked yesterday and Grandma, visiting her at her new senior community in Pennsylvania.

Want to bring something to Show and Tell?
  • If you would like to join circle time and show something to the class, simply post each Saturday night (or earlier in the week or on Monday if you can't do the weekend), hopefully including a picture if possible, and telling us about your item. It can be anything--a photo from a trip, a picture of the dress you bought this week, a random image from an old yearbook showing a person you miss. It doesn't need to contain a picture if you can't get a picture--you can simply tell a story about a single item. The list opens every Saturday night and closes on Tuesday night.
  • You must mention Show and Tell and include a link back to this post in your post so people can find the rest of the class. This spreads new readership around through the list. This is now required.
  • Label your post "Show and Tell" each week and then come back here and add the permalink for the post via the Mr. Linky feature (not your blog's main url--use the permalink for your specific Show and Tell post).
  • Oh, and then the point is that you click through all of your classmates and see what they are showing this week. And everyone loves a good "ooooh" and "aaaah" and to be queen (or king) of the playground for five minutes so leave them a comment if you can.
  • Did you post a link and now it's missing?: I reserve the right to delete any links that are not leading to a Show and Tell post or are the blogging equivalent of a spitball.

Your grandmother (I mean to say it this way) sounds as sweet as your cake looks.

What a treasure that she classifies "family" as affection rather than just by blood.

What a lovely sentiment! I had a boyfriend who's grandma treated me that way. We all called her "gram". It was so hard to say goodbye to him, knowing it meant saying goodbye to her.

"I am not a jewelry person or a clothing person. I am an old-pictures-or-serving-pieces person."

Me too...it is a great way to live.

How beautiful! Both the relationship between you and your grandmother and the cake plate. I love it! Thank you for sharing it.

What a wonderful gesture for her to do. My grandmother (mine, not hubby's) gave me a silver plate just a few weeks before she died. I will cherish it for always.

I hope she is around for a long time still for you, Josh and the twins to enjoy.

How very sweet of your grandmother...How close you people are is obvious by the face that she admits you both as her grandchildren and not as grandson and wife...it shows the bonding between you....What cake is that which is resting on the plate?

Aw, how beautiful. I've put in a request for my grandmother's cookbook. But I don't think my mother is ready to give it up yet.

A sentiment even lovelier than the gift itself!

Very beautiful! Those are the kinds of gifts that mean the most.

Chocolate cake with a whipped chocolate icing. The internal layers were iced by the ChickieNob and Wolvog. I did the outside.

The cake somewhat melted in the car (it was a 2 1/2 hour drive), especially since we had a 3 hour detour because I developed a UTI this morning. BUT even that did not deter us from visiting her and dropping off said cake.

We did also manage to find the worst restaurant in the world. The meal ended up being fodder for the 2 1/2 hour drive back home. We had to talk about every horrific morsel.

What a beautiful family you have. Its a treasure to know that she knows you so well.

My word verification is only one letter away from saying bequest.

What a pretty cake plate!! I love it when we get things from family memebers, and I love it more when they gift purposely...either while still alive, or with notes later. My great aunt has done this with her tea cups and my grandma has done some of it as well. It means so much to know it was FOR YOU from them, though of course things you get after a loved one dies are special, too, even if you just are chosing a favorite.

Isn't it amazing when families mesh so well?

Yay for Grandmothers! Sadly both of mine have passed away but their presence and wisdom is everlasting. I hope I can one day be that silver-haired lady who passes on wisdom and important keepsakes, like cake plates!

Grandma rocks. The cake plate couldn't have gone to a better person.

Oh, that was so sweet of her, and what a beautiful plate.

Your post reminded me of my husband's grandma. I will always remember how incredibly happy she was the day we told her we were getting married. No one was as happy or excited for us as that woman was. It is so wonderful to feel fully loved by someone that doesn't have to love you like that.

Wow, what a gift. I love this story you told us. Thank you for this post.

What an absolutely beautiful cake plate--and how precious that it came from Josh's mom, who seems to have noticed so many of the things that make you, you. I love it that she introduces you as her granchildren. What a sweet and special family you have.

I'm a serving pieces and old pictures person too -- but when offered jewelry (which has happened with my grandmother and my husband's), I do accept.

I love this. I love grandma. I love the cake plate. I love the story. All of our grandparents (mine and my husband's are now gone) and it saddens me. I have some wonderful treasures from my grandfather though and my husband has a few special things from his two grandmothers and it's those special gifts that make us smile as we think of them.
